As have I. While I am good at social interactions, I have found that friends are more difficult to come by. Especially friends I can trust.
[Don't worry, Wylan; you are included in his trusthworthy friend group, small as it is.]
He should be. Sore and in the need of new book holster and shirt, but I think he will heal. I used items out of a medical kit I found.
[Which wasn't much and wasn't what he was used to. They deserved better, for their own safety and the safety of those they loved. Bandages and a cream could not fix everything.]
We have talked about making potions, but I do not know how well they will work. I am concerned about the future here; who knows what the next week will bring and who it may harm.
I'm glad you found people you can trust here, at least. It's not easy.
[He's glad that he numbers among them.]
I'm glad he'll be okay. [He is relieved by that news, but the fact that he was burned... he wonders how useful the items are in the medical kit.] I'm sure we can find him a new shirt, but the book holster might be more difficult.
[Unfortunately, the "potions" he knew only brought up painful memories of his father trying to "cure" him of his illiteracy.]
I am too, but I don't know if we can really think about the future here. I try and take it one day at a time with how unpredictable the days can be. [From one torture to the next, the whims of fate could be very cruel.]
It isn't. Especially with my previous employment. [And crimes. Transgressions. But he wasn't sure if Caleb had shared them with Wylan or if Wylan should know. Some things were better left untold, like crimes against his home.]
I will be looking for the bookholsters, I think. It may cost some favors, but I am hoping that I can find someone in this place - [His tone shifted a little bit, a little exasperated.] - who can do leatherwork. Surely it can't be that difficult with the other events that happen here.
[The erotic pleasures and cruel punishments alike.
One day at a time. He wished he could be like that, like Mollymauk and Jester who thrived in that sort of thought. But he? He still couldn't. Not yet.] I know there is no way to plan, but preparation has to help. What do your companions do?
Maybe we can change that. Branch out more. [Do something.] I don't know.
[Speaking about the book holsters makes him realize something - Jesper might be able to do it.]
Oh! Actually, my boyfriend might be able to help with that. Maybe when we get back. He's Grisha, and he might be able to make them. His abilities are with material things utilizing the Small Science. [As if Essek would understand what that is.] It's like magic, just not in the same way you might understand magic.
[What did his companions do?]
Kaz likes to plan. He can't plan out every detail but he does his best to plan for everything. Inej listens and learns - she's really good at gathering information. Jesper kind of gets his hands into everything, like a jack of all trades...
[The sudden offering of a name – especially of one he knew – made him smile. There was something to be said for having it done by familiar people…and hopefully it wouldn’t require a piece of his soul to get it done.]
Might you be able to ask him? Or should I? [Grisha. It had been some time since he had heard that word. He nodded a little, his lips thin.] I…spoke with another one, another Grisha, when I first arrived. He was a…very interesting man dealing in shadows. [A man who had been far more captivating than he had any right to be.] He disappeared a few months later.
[Essek couldn’t help the fond smile leaking into his words.] Do not repeat this to him, but I believe that Caleb might have been, hm, jealous.
I met Jesper on a mission some time ago; he seemed perfectly pleasant and capable. [A sign of approval from Essek for sure.] The others though, I’m afraid I haven’t met them. However planning and listening are skills many people unfortunately lack.
I can ask Jesper. He would just need to see one of Caleb's books or a book of similar size and he can get them made. [There's a pause, and it's a good thing that Essek can't see his expression right now.] Wait you... talked to the Darkling?
[Though the Darkling wasn't here anymore, he wondered if Essek was told about how dangerous he was. If he spoke to Alina at all he might know.]
I think you'd like them. Kaz can be rough around the edges, but he looks out for people. [The caveat was that it was people he trusted and it was a very, very small circle of people that he was very lucky to be among.] Inej is really, really good at sneaking up on people - which makes it easy for her to evesdrop.
That should be easy. I can get you a book and bring it over…when?
[The pause caught him, and Essek blinked once. He remembered the fascinating way the shadows moved, and talks over remorse and power. He remembered offering to teach him, an attempt made in the very library he had come to love so much. But there was something about the way that Wylab said it…]
The grisha who could use shadows? I knew him as the General, but…yes. We were very interested in each other’s skills; if I’m honest, I think Caleb might have been jealous. [It was his turn for a small pause.] You don’t believe he had anything to do with his disappearance, do you?
[He cleared his throat a little.] Someday, you will have to introduce me. Perhaps we could have a gathering, your family and mine.
no subject
[Which was mostly true. It's just been those he's close to that he's really been talking with.]
Is he... is he okay?! [A pause.] Is there a spell to help him? [It would be pretty useful to know some sort of healing spell.]
Maybe we can find a doctor. A salve might help but I'm not too familiar with medicinal herbs to be of much use in that regard.
[He's sure there's something in the library but that was back in Penance and he hadn't really gone looking too much around the island.]
